“Take a Bat in There”: Ryan Garcia’s Promoter Discloses the Sole Method to Stop Gervonta Davis

At the NYC press conference for Ryan Garcia vs. Gervonta Davis, Oscar De La Hoya answered how he would fight Davis in the ring. While Garcia prepares for the biggest fight of his boxing career so far on the 22nd of April, his promoter Oscar De La Hoya jokingly discloses a questionable method he would have applied against ‘Tank’ in boxing. Before going into detail on how he would strategize against Davis, De La Hoya spoke about using a ‘bat’ in the ring.

In his latest interview with FightHype, Oscar De La Hoya, on being asked how he would approach ‘Tank’ in the ring, said, “Let’s take a bat in there. I would take a bat in there.”

Fans have questioned whether or not this assertion conveyed a lack of faith in Garcia. However, De La Hoya went into detail and talked about the use of jabs and combinations against Davis.

As per BoxRec, Ryan Garcia currently stands 5′ 10″ tall while Gervonta Davis possesses a height of 5′ 5½″ in the ring. Undoubtedly, there is a significant gap between the two with respect to height and reach.

Thus, De La Hoya emphasized the use of jabs and combinations against Davis.

“I fought every style in the book. I’m a huge advocate of the jab. That’s it. I’m a huge advocate of the jab. The jab stops everything,” De La Hoya said. No matter what, jabs followed by combinations, as per De La Hoya, should bring a fruitful result against ‘Tank’ Davis.

“No matter what. And what you do after is on you. But I would throw double, triple, four jabs, five jabs, and then go combinations left and right. I loved throwing four, five, [or] six punch combinations. On your toes, you gotta fight them long“, De La Hoya added.

Anyway, as Vasyl Lomachenko acknowledged, Gervonta Davis is used to fighting opponents taller than him. In fact, he has repeatedly demonstrated his ability to measure reach and find a way out for himself in the ring. Undoubtedly, Davis will enter with his own game plan on the 22nd of April.
