Last year, on April 30, New York’s Madison Square Garden found itself packed to the brim. The audience present watched with bated breath as two boxers slugged it out. And no, they weren’t cheering for a Heavyweight face-off. Former Olympic gold medalist and the undisputed (female) Lightweight champion Katie Taylor had to defend her WBA, WBC, WBO, IBF, and the Ring titles from women’s Featherweight champion Amanda Serrano. For the thirty-six-year-old Taylor, it was the sixth unified title defense. The show put up by the duo changed many an outlook when it came to women’s boxing.

The ten-round thriller in New York ended with the Irish Katie Taylor’s victory by a split decision. The bout is regarded by many as the “biggest women’s fight of all time.”

ESPN declared it the “best fight of 2022 among women”. On the other hand, Sports Illustrated went a step ahead and named it last year’s best overall fight. After the fight, Serrano, promoted by Jake Paul‘s Most Valuable Promotions, returned to the Featherweight division. She eventually became the women’s undisputed Featherweight champion through her two consecutive wins over Sarah Mahfoud and Erika Cruz. On the other hand, Taylor had to defend her title once by October last year.

Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano II

Given the bar raised by the duo, it was apparent that rematch talks would show up. Fans finally received the exciting news at New York’s Hulu Theatre on February 4. Amanda Serrano successfully defended her WBC, WBO, IBF, IBO, and the Ring titles against Erika Cruz. In turn, she added the WBA belt to her kitty.

Katie Taylor, who was present at the venue, joined during the post-fight discussion. It was then revealed that a rematch with Serrano would take place, with all probability in Dublin, Ireland. Soon, May 20 got confirmed as the fight date. But barely had the excellent news sunk, in came an awful whammy.

Precise details remain unavailable. However, per available reports, a nagging hand injury seems to have forced Amanda Serrano to pull out of the big match. Promoters Matchroom Sport and Most Valuable Promotions announced, “Due to an injury sustained by Amanda Serrano, Matchroom Boxing, and Most Valuable Promotions regret to announce that the Taylor-Serrano II bout on May 20 in Dublin will not go ahead as planned. The teams are in discussions about finding a revised date for the bout.

According to an article in ESPN, reportedly, Serrano received the injury first during a fight against Miriam Gutierrez in 2021. Though it never warranted surgery, the resulting pain has finally compelled an immediate pause in her boxing activities.
