WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has been nominated for BBC Sports Personality of the Year. It was announced on Twitter that ‘The Gypsy King’ had made the 6-person shortlist for the award; and he joins five other high-profile athletes. The nomination comes for his WBC title win against Deontay Wilder, by which he became a two-time heavyweight champion of the world. However, Fury’s nomination goes beyond his victory.

In the first fight, Fury had to dig deep and get up from a vicious knockdown and earn himself a draw. This added to the story of his comeback and made it an incredibly inspiration journey.

This is not the first nomination the ‘Gypsy King’ has received for the prestigious award. The first was in 2015, even before he went through his mental health struggles. That was after he beat Wladimir Klitschko to become heavyweight champion of the world for the first time. However, he finished fifth in that year.

Who are the other nominees joining Tyson Fury?

The heavyweight champion joins the likes of Liverpool FC captain Jordan Henderson; who, with his impressive performances, led the club to Premier League victory. Lewis Hamilton also makes the shortlist after he won a record 7th world championship. Stuart Broad also joins the list of nominees, while Ronnie O’Sullivan and Hollie Doyle make up the other two.
