“Mayweather has statistics on fights of 50 wins and zero losses, he is the greatest in boxing and he wants to fight with the same champion who did not lose a single fight, with Khabib, everything is fine, but now we have Tony Ferguson on the line. We said a long time ago: let us finish with Tony, after that we will work with [the team of Ukrainian boxer Vasily] Lomachenko for six months, then there will be a boxing fight. We offer any day anywhere, with only one condition: 11 rounds in boxing and one in mixed martial arts, we will stand 11 rounds against the best boxer, so why not go one round according to the rules of MMA with us? But all things will happen after Tony.” Khabib’s father said.

Khabib’s father’s condition will likely create a lot of trouble in the lead up to this potential cross-sport match up. According to him, Mayweather will have to compete under MMA rules if Khabib can get past 11 rounds against the boxing champion.

Guess it’s already established that Mayweather will likely not last a single minute against Khabib with MMA rules. However, the first question is, if Khabib can last 12 rounds of boxing against someone like Floyd Mayweather.

What do we know of Khabib’s boxing?

Khabib looked incredible against Al Iaquinta where the current lightweight champion showed precision with his strikes. He created distance, and looked patient in his attack. Khabib knocked down Mcgregor during their fight at UFC 229. He also looked incredible in his attacks, and managed to evade Mcgregor at his aggressive best. Khabib succesfully defended his title belt against Dustin Poirier and looked incredible in his stand-up game. However, is it enough to last 11 rounds of boxing with someone like Floyd Mayweather?

Conor McGregor against Floyd Mayweather

Conor McGregor is an elite boxer, who has time and again showed his knockout power and incredible boxing in inside the octagon. McGregor faced Floyd Mayweather and had a relatively better performance than many boxers. However, Floyd finished McGregor in the early minutes of the tenth round. Looking at how a prime Conor McGregor fared against the undefeated Floyd Mayweather, it will be Khabib’s toughest challenge till date.

If Khabib can go past Tony Ferguson at UFC 249, his father has opened up the idea of a boxing match with Mayweather after six months of extensive training.

Khabib Nurmagomedov is often criticized for his cardio, however, he has been absolutely dominant throughout every round that he has fought inside the octagon. However, a stand-up game of boxing for 11 rounds against someone like Mayweather will be a huge task even for Khabib. Also, Mayweather will look to finish Khabib, rather than go for a beat-down in the 12th round with MMA rules. Additionally, there will be a lot of other factors which might play an equally important role in the outcome of the match. Mayweather retired from professional boxing in 2015, and returned for a single fight against McGregor in Aug. 2017.

Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Floyd Mayweather can only happen in late December of 2020. In the process, it will mark three long years of absence from the ring for Mayweather. He is currenty 42 years old, and will turn 43 next February. The age factor will play a key role in determining how efficient Mayweather will be inside the ring after a gap of three long years, and with age showing it’s symptoms. However, many boxers and fighters continue to perform incredibly well despite the age.

It will be interesting to see if this match takes place. One of the undefeated greats will surely register their first loss. However, if it’s Khabib, it won’t be inside an octagon, but inside a ring.
