If you saw the recently concluded 2019 Australian Grand Prix, then you may have noted that of the drivers who didn’t manage to finish the race, there was one Spaniard’s name on the list.

It was none other than Carlos Sainz Jr. of McLaren. Out there for his new team, one to which Fernando Alonso integrally belonged until 2018, the contest wasn’t the finest for the youngster. But if there was something that the well-known Spaniard may have wanted to have avoided, then it was the DNF at Melbourne.

Isn’t it?

Yet, despite enduring a forgettable race, with teammate Lando Norris too missing out on scoring, Carlos Sainz Jr. decided to take things in his stride.

He did, however, have an observation to make, albeit one pertaining to his last F1 team: Renault.

So that leads us to the question. What was he referring to and what inference does that lead one to?

Well, it’s not every day when one sees a few things/observations being made candidly-right? And in a sport that thrives on glamor, thrill and PR-regimented communication strategies, it’s a whiff of fresh air when one doesn’t attribute a filter to one’s statement.

So when Carlos Sainz Jr. shared that given Renault have only just delivered on the ‘engine’ that they should’ve ideally had two seasons ago, there were some curious gazes, reflections, discussions and who knows- even differences of opinion?

That Carlos also shared that Renault’s current engine (power) is such that can give McLaren (the Spaniard’s current team) some competition, was interesting.

Having said that, do you really think that Renault’s contest is with the likes of McLaren and not Red Bull instead? Also- how far can Renault continue their tussle in the midfield, provided at their disposal are two elegant, experienced drivers, in Hulkenberg and Ricciardo?

Will one get to see a thrilling Ricciardo and Hulkenberg vs Sainz and Norris battle in the coming races? Will we see Carlos Sainz Jr.’s McLaren successfully outpacing McLaren in the fight for the midfield, considering Ferrari, Red Bull, and of course, Mercedes is the familiar troika battling in the front?

Questions, there are many. Answers, as always, rest in the future.

Also, while it’s one thing to compliment a team and in fact, prepare one’s own to mount an impressive comeback (the MGU-K failure at McLaren preventing Sainz to score some points) one would eagerly anticipate Fernando Alonso’s biggest admirer to return to scoring ways.
