Pierre Gasly has been having a nightmarish season in 2019 and has struggled to keep up with teammate Max Verstappen. So far, the Dutchman has racked up 2 wins and a handful of podiums. Gasly on the other hand, has only only been as high as 4th, which was in Silverstone.

Now, Red Bull are clearly fed to the teeth with the Frenchman’s poor performance. Many expert and pundits have also predicted that Pierre Gasly may not last long at Red Bull. Back in 2018, when he debuted for Toro Rosso, he consistently outperformed teammate Brendon Hartley. So, when Daniel Ricciardo suddenly announced his departure to Renault, the choice was clear.

However, one may now be wondering, is a single season really enough for a driver to prove his mettle? In other words, was Pierre Gasly bumped up to the senior squad too early?

After a disappointing Hungarian Grand Prix for Gasly, Red Bull team principal, Christian Horner told Channel 4, “We really desperately need Pierre to be ahead of the McLarens & fighting the Ferraris, because constructor-wise we really need to start taking points off them with both cars.”

On an awkward note, Pierre Gasly has taken P6 in Hungary for the second straight year. However, last season when he was in Toro Rosso, he was on the same lap as the race leaders. Fast-forward to Sunday and the young Frenchman has been lapped while in a Red Bull, and by his own teammate.

On the other end of the scale, there is the potential threat of Pierre Gasly falling victim to the resurgent McLarens. Former Toro Rosso driver, Carlos Sainz has been scoring plenty of points. However, Gasly is underperforming and Sainz is now five point behind him. So, the Spaniard could very well be within a shout of being the Best of the Rest.
