Ever since Conor McGregor suffered the loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov he has been campaigning for a rematch. Khabib won the fight fair and square and fairly dominated Conor until he got the submission in the 4th round. However, it can be argued that Conor was not in his best shape going into the fight against the Russian.

And that could have been the narrative going into the rematch. The question still stays whether Conor at his absolute best can beat arguably the greatest lightweight of all time, Khabib Nurmagomedov. However, it seems Khabib had no interest in giving Conor the rematch. But that has not stopped Conor to get one more opportunity to avenge his loss against the lightweight champion.

According to UFC president Dana White, Conor even believes that he is going to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 249 instead of Tony Ferguson.

The saga of Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagoemdov have been full of ups and downs. This fight has been made official for four times in the past. However, due to unfortunate injuries and botched weight cuts, Khabib and Tony have not faced each other in the octagon yet. They are scheduled to fight each other for the fifth time in the main event of UFC 249. However, Conor believes this fight is going to fall apart again and he will fight for the title.

In a recent interview with MacLife, UFC president, Dana White talked about the obsession Conor has with the Khabib rematch and stated:

“What he has been obsessed with since his last fight is the rematch with Khabib. So Saturday is a big step in that direction. Conor believes that Khabib vs Tony is not going to happen. He believes that fight will not happen. So he wanted this fight(Donald Cerrone) at 170 pounds. So he can get back in there, shake off some ring rust, get a win, and turn right back around and fight Khabib when Tony falls out, is what he believes.”

Dana White has already made it clear that Conor will be fighting for the title if he gets past Donald Cerrone at UFC 246. Conor has also stated that he will be prepared as a replacement if Khabib or Tony gets injured leading up to the title fight.

Though the fans will be disappointed if Khabib vs Tony falls apart again, it’s good to know that Conor will be jumping in to save the day.
