Asia Cup 2020: ACC Conducts A Video Conference To Discuss Possible Venues And Time Frame

Tournaments across the globe continue to face the dire consequences of the Coronavirus outbreak. One such event which is still hanging by a thread is Asia Cup 2020. The event was originally scheduled for September 2020, right before T20 World Cup.

ACC takes a meeting to discuss the future of Asia Cup 2020

On the 8th of June, the members of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) conducted a meeting over video to discuss the future of ACC’s events, especially Asia Cup 2020. Primarily, the board realises the importance of conducting the tournament. Hence, they are in the process of discussing the different venues that will make this possible.

However, the board has said that they are still discussing the final fate of the event. One of them includes whether it can move ahead as per schedule or not.

The Executive Board of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) met via a video conference today (Monday, 08 June 2020). High on the agenda were matters relating to the scheduled events of the ACC.

In particular, the Board emphasised on the importance of holding the Asia Cup 2020. In light of the impact and consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, possible venue options for the Asia Cup 2020 were discussed and it was decided to take the final decision in due course.”

Another agenda that the board discussed is it’s involvement in Asian Games 2022 scheduled at Hangzhou, China.

BCCI has their own conditions for the tournament

BCCI President, Sourav Ganguly, and BCCI Secretary, Jay Shah, attended the meeting as well.

Currently, the hosting rights for Asia Cup 2020 is with Pakistan. However, the BCCI is taking their own stand. As per the BCCI, they will only send the Indian national team for the tournament if it commences at a neutral location.

India and Pakistan have not had a bilateral match for a while now. As a matter of fact, the two teams have only played against each other during tournament held at locations which aren’t India or Pakistan.

The previous version of Asia Cup was in United Arab Emirates. Team India won the title by defeating Bangladesh in the finals. Rohit Sharma was leading the Men in Blue.
