Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir feels that the chances of MS Dhoni making a comeback in the Indian team would dim in case the IPL 2020 does not take place.

MS Dhoni hasn’t played for India since July 2019. He last appeared in the semi-final match of World Cup 2019 where India lost to Kiwis. Since then there has been no news of Mahi’s return in the National team. Dhoni was eyeing a return to competitive cricket based on his performance in the Indian Premier League

However, the IPL had been suspended for an indefinite time due to the coronavirus outbreak in the country. Owing to the rapid spread of COVID-19 in India, the chances of the tournament getting canceled are also increasing.

As the league is on the verge of getting canceled, the questions related to the fate of MS in Indian cricket are making headlines. Many legends of cricket both Indian and foreigners have expressed their opinion on this. While some feel that Mahi has a lot of potential left, others believe that there is no place for him in the National team. Things are getting more complicated as there has no official statement by MS Dhoni.

Gautam Gambhir recently talked about the retirement of MS in a chat show called ‘Cricket Connected’ of Star Sports.

In Gambhir’s viewpoint, Dhoni can’t make a comeback in the team if the IPL 2020 doesn’t happen. He further added that KL Rahul would be a good replacement for MS as he has done exceptionally well.

“If the IPL does not happen this year, then it will become difficult for MS Dhoni to make a comeback. On what basis can he be selected since he’s not been playing for the last one or one and a half year,” Gambhir said.

He further added, “The apt replacement for Dhoni could be KL Rahul. Ever since he has donned the ’keeper’s gloves in white-ball cricket, I’ve seen his performance, both batting and ’keeping. Obviously, his keeping is not as good as Dhoni’s, but if you are looking at T20 cricket, Rahul’s a utility player, can keep and bat at No. 3 or 4,”

The 38-year-old concluded, “If the IPL does not happen, then MS Dhoni’s chances for a comeback look dim. Ultimately, you are representing India, so whoever dishes out the best performance and can win the match for India should play for the team,”
