The ESL One League is a Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournament run by the Electronic Sports League. The ESL One Cologne, after much deliberation, has decided to convert the tournament to an online platform. This decision came keeping in mind the global pandemic, which has made travel pretty strenuous. More importantly, there has been a lot of speculation around the dates of the event because of travel restrictions and regulations. As a result, the 7th edition of the CSGO tournament will be held from August 18-30, covering four regions- Europe, Asia, North America, and Oceania.

MiBR invited to ESL Cologne One Ranked 22

The biggest announcement has been the invitation sent to MIBR (Made in Brazil), a subsidiary of Immortals Gaming Club, which has sent the world in a state of shock. A battle of wits began on Twitter as users expressed their dejection.

The teams were plucked based on a regionalized original ESL One Cologne qualification rule via the ESL Pro Tour ranking, ESL Pro Tour Challenger events, and the ESL World Ranking.

Responding to the tweets, an update was added on the website to provide justification for the decision to invite MIBR to be a part of the top 24 teams.

The CSGO team won the tournament in the year 2016 and 2017. They are the best team from Brazil and muster a lot of support from the country. Supporters were quick to stick up for their team, taking to Twitter to voice their support.

Viewership for the event at the expense of better teams?

MIBR is an old and established CSGO team with a better fan following than most. Hence, it will attract more viewership. However, many have criticized the decision because smaller teams, rising through the ranks, have been ignored as a result. The event’s website has since provided a justification in an attempt to maintain the integrity of the event.

Moreover, members of MiBR had to travel back home owing to the increasing number of COVID-19 cases worldwide. Consequently, the team submitted a request to continue being a part of the tournament. The organizers are considering this request and hence have been labeled biased. This is simply because it would rule out teams that have a better rank than MiBR. These include GODSENT ranked at 18, ENCE ranked at 19 and SPIRIT ranked at 21. All are ranked higher than MIBR.

Viewers around the world are waiting for the day the tournament commences, which will bring an end to this battle of wits, or maybe not?
