Dallas Stars defensman Roman Polak had to be taken off in a stretcher after a brutal collision during the season opener in Dallas on Thursday.

In the second period of the match between Dallas Stars and Boston Bruins at American Airlines Center, Polak went chasing the puck near the edge competing with  Boston’s Chris Wager. In the tussle, Wager hit the boards with his back, while Polak could not stop himself from colliding with the boards with his head first. The collision looked scary, when the 33-year old Czech Republic international was seen laying motionless on the ice. The medical staff rushed onto to attend Polak immediately. The situation was reported to be stabilized after Polak was taken to a local hospital.

“The good news is Roman has full use of his extremities,” coach Jim Montgomery said in his postgame news conference. “We hear he’s feeling pretty good at the hospital, but we don’t have results yet. We’re hopeful that he may be a player again after a couple days.”

This was not the only injury in the match. During the first period, Blake Comeau had his face covered in blood, when the puck deflected directly onto his face.
