Daniil Medvedev Destroys Dominic Thiem to Reach Semifinals of Montreal Open 2019

Daniil Medvedev cruises past through the world No.4, Dominic Thiem 6-3, 6-1 to reach the semifinals of the Montreal Open 2019. He will face the winner between Karen Khachanov and Alexander Zverev to fix a place in the finals.

Daniil Medvedev entered the match after an imperious year. He defeated Kyle Edmund and Cristian Garin in straight sets in the second round and round of 16 respectively. While Dominic Thiem was aiming for his seventh straight victory overall and third consecutive victory against the Russian. Thiem was 0-5 at the Canadian Open before this year, but he reached the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open for the first time in his career.

Daniil Medvedev broke Dominic Thiem quite easily in the opening game of the match as the Austrian started off with uncertainty. Both the players held their serve till 5-3 when Dominic Thiem was serving to stay to in the set.

The 25-year-old was looking to come back in the match in the previous game but he Daniil Medvedev was choking him as he earned broke him to claim the opening set 6-3. The Austrian hit only four winners against thirteen unforced errors.

In the second set, Dominic Thiem changed his tactics as he used backhand slices. It looked like the backhand slice could work against the 23-year-old as Thiem won the second point on Medvedev’s serve with the slice in the first game of the second set. However, Daniil Medvedev was just dominating the match as he won the next 14 points and breaking Thiem in the second and the fourth game as he went up 5-0 winning the last 7 games consecutively.

Everything Medvedev touched turned into gold as he did not allow Dominic Thiem to come into the match. Thiem saved a match point while serving to stay in the tournament at 5-0. However, the Austrian couldn’t break him in the next game as Medvedev held his serve to win the set 6-1.

Medvedev conquered his first match against Dominic Thiem to narrow down the head-to-head record against the Austrian 2-1. The Russian was untouchable in the match with Thiem struggling with his backhand and first serves.
