Born on February 11, 1996, Daniil Sergeyevich Medvedev is a professional tennis player from Moscow, Russia. Medvedev is currently ranked 4th in the men’s ATP rankings but was a former world number 1 in February 2022. He has won 20 ATP men’s singles titles, which also include the 2020 ATP Finals and the 2021 US Open title in New York, where he defeated Novak Djokovic in the final. Daniil Medvedev took to tennis when he was just six years old, when his father, Sergey Medvedev, a computer engineer by profession, enrolled him in tennis lessons under Ekaterina Kyruchkova, a former coach to ex-world number two Vera Zvonareva. Medvedev also had a keen interest in the harpsichord and playing guitar in his childhood. He later moved to France with his family to focus on tennis and is fluent in French, English, and Russian.

It took Daniil another seven years to play his first junior match at a grade four tournament in Estonia in 2009. He was an unpolished product then, but between October 2012 and July 2013, Daniil set the junior circuit on fire by winning six titles, including four straight ones. A year later, he turned professional and ended his junior career with a record of 109-43 wins.

Daniil turned professional in 2014, and in the last decade has tasted both the highs and the lows. The highs have come in the form of being an ATP Finals champion in 2020 when he defeated Austrian <a href="https://www.essentiallysports.com/tag/dominic-thiem/">Dominic Thiem</a> in a 3-set match to win the Year-end finals for the first time in his career. A year later, things went from good to great, when he won his only grand slam to date in New York. Daniil defeated world number one Novak Djokovic in straight sets to lift the 2021 US Open in New York. The win also denied Novak of a calendar slam. The Russian played non-stop tennis in 2021 which ended on a high note as he helped team Russia win the Davis Cup Finals.

Along the way, there have been heartbreaks as well. The Russian has made it to six Grand Slam Finals in his career - three apiece at the Australian Open and at the US Open and has managed to win just one. Apart from the grandslams and ATP Finals, Daniil has lifted six ATP Tour Masters 1000 titles in his glorious career and lost three. Overall, Daniil has won 20 ATP titles in his career so far.

It was in the 2015 Kremlin Cup when he made his ATP debut in a doubles match, partnering Aslan Karatsev. He made his ATP Singles main draw debut at the 2016 Nice Open in France but lost to Argentine Guido Pella in the first round. His maiden ATP singles final came at the 2017 Chennai Open in India, where he lost to Roberto Bautista Agut in two sets. 

It was at the 2017 Wimbledon that Daniil registered his maiden Grand Slam match win against Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka. That was the start of big things to come, as he won his maiden ATP title at the Sydney International at the start of 2018. Since then, Daniil hasn’t looked back.

Medvedev also won most of his titles in hard court tournaments with 18 titles already to his name.

Medvedev had a dream run at the summer hard court season in the USA in 2019. He reached six consecutive tournament finals, including one at the US Open and three at Masters 1000 events. In the year 2022, he managed to make his second successive finals appearance at the Australian Open. Though, he was defeated by Rafael Nadal in a 5-set thriller. Later at the Vienna Open, he defeated Karen Khachanov to win his second ATP 500 title.

In 2023, Medvedev managed to win three titles - the Rotterdam Open, Qatar, and Dubai Open within a space of three weeks at the start of the year. However, he ran out of luck at the Majors, losing in the 3rd round of the Australian Open and facing humiliation in Paris, by losing in the opening round. However, he did produce his best tennis on grass, by reaching the semifinal at the Wimbledon, and one more final at the US Open, losing to his old nemesis, Novak Djokovic.

The start of the year 2024 was a great one for Daniil, as he reached the final of the Australian Open for the third time in his career. This time, he was the favorite against Italian Jannik Sinner, but lost the final in five sets, and thus became the only player in the open era to lose two major finals after taking a 2-0 lead.
