Daniil Medvedev Reveals the ‘Key Ingredient’ to Emulate His Last Year’s Run at US Open

World No.5 Daniil Medvedev will play his 3rd round match today against Jeffrey John Wolf to reach the 4th round and the second week of the 2020 US Open.
Grand Slams are the top tier tournaments in the tennis season. Gruesome five-setters played over two weeks, winning one is surely a great achievement. Medvedev came close to winning one last year as he lost a close final to Rafael Nadal. Now looking to enter the second week of the US Open for the second consecutive time Medvedev revealed what is needed to go long in a Grand Slam in his post-match press conference.

Daniil Medvedev on how to reach the second week of a Grand Slam
Medvedev believes consistency is important. Winning 3 sets every other day is tough and so consistently performing can yield the player a good result.
“The biggest key is consistency, because you are playing out of five-set matches. To even get in the second week you need to usually win three or four, depends when you start your tournament, but let’s say four matches if you want to really feel in the second week play in the quarterfinal.” Medvedev said

“So if you are not consistent, you cannot, because you’re going to lose one of these rounds. That’s why Grand Slams are tough. You need to win three sets every match. Of course physically you need to be strong, as well. But I think consistency the key.”

Grand Slams can be physical as well. Some players are stretched to the 5th set and so play matches over four hours. But that is when the player has to maintain a consistent level to continue forward.

Medvedev reached the finals last year. He will now set sights on bettering that result. The Russian will look to be the first male Grand Slam winner from Russia since 2005.
Medvedev is on the opposite side of World No.1 Novak Djokovic’s draw. Medvedev is the third seed and so is one of the favorites to win and challenge Djokovic for the US Open.
