The main card of UFC Boston started with a barn burner between Darren Stewart and Deron Winn in a middleweight fight. Going into the fight there was a little animosity between the two fighters and hence the win over Winn became extra special for Darren Stewart.

Well, Deron Win said that he was going to wrestle Stewart to death and he surely did land a lot of takedowns throughout the three rounds. However, his overall gameplan seemed a bit off as he was outnumbered by Stewart when the number of strikes thrown is concerned.

Deron Winn started the fight on a strong note, landing a quick takedown. Winn trains with Daniel Cormier and Khabib Nurmagomedov at American Kickboxing Academy and he is a decorated wrestler. hence it was expected that he would outwrestle Darren Stewart and he did the same. Stewart got taken down again and again in the first round and could not get a lot of offenses going in his favor. However, in the final seconds of the round one, Darren Stewart hurt Winn with some sharp elbows on the ground from his back.

After an uneventful first round, Darren Stewart made a come back in round 2 and lighten up Winn with beautiful combinations. He also defended a takedown from Winn showing some authority inside the octagon. Deron Winn’s defense was not solid when it comes to striking as he was taking shots frequently. Stewart almost finished the fight in round number 2, but Winn was saved by the bell.

The third round was pretty much even. Stewart started strong and landed a lot of strikes on Winn, while Winn controlled Stewart on the ground for a meaningful period.

Although it was a great fight, it’s fair to say that Darren Stewart got the better of Deron Winn after the first round as he won the fight via split decision.
