David Ferrer Named as New Tournament Director of Barcelona Open

Former world No.3 David Ferrer has been named as the new tournament director of the Barcelona Open. The Board of Directors of the Real Club Tenis Barcelona (RCTB) announced on Wednesday that David Ferrer will replace Albert Costa, who had held the position for eleven years.

“The (RCTB) has agreed with Albert Costa the completion of his stage as sports director of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell to assign the witness to the also prominent former tennis player David Ferrer,” the club said in a statement.

Less than five months after retiring from professional tennis, the Spaniard is delighted to find a new suit. He said: “Assuming the sports director of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell is an unimaginable achievement for years and a great exciting challenge in my life as an athlete and tennis lover.” 

David Ferrer has been the four-time finalist at the Barcelona Open in 15 attempts. Ferrer has also been a part of the Spanish Davis Cup team who won the event in 2008, 2009 and 2011 and also have been the runners-up in 2012.

David Ferrer aims to “turn over an event with a deep-rooted tradition and an extraordinary evolution all those experiences and experiences that I have known as a player during my professional career”.

Under Albert Costa’s management, the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell has established itself as one of the biggest ATP 500 events on the ATP circuit. In 11 years leading the event, Costa laid a strong base to develop the Barcelona Open to become the top five clay-court tournaments in the world. David Ferrer also praised his compatriot and thanked him for valuable collaboration in the transfer.

“On the other hand,” Ferrer added, “It is a double challenge to give continuity and evolve the professional legacy given by my friend Albert Costa, whom I can only congratulate and thank for your valuable collaboration in the transfer.”
