Former Napoli goalkeeper Marco Amelia believes that his old team signed David Ospina because he reminds them of Liverpool legend Pepe Reina. Amelia recently spoke about the Colombian international ahead of his possible Serie A debut against Milan. The 29-year old is quite a catch for a team of Napoli’s calibre and people can place bets on him on the ladbrokes website.
Ospina was loaned the club from Arsenal for the season. This was when it became evident that Petr Cech and Bernd Leno got higher preference compared to him.
“Napoli chose Ospina because he is reminiscent of Pepe Reina,” Amelia said. The Italian previously played for Milan and Livorno as well as spending a season at Chelsea.
“He also helps pass the ball around along with the defence and becomes useful if there is pressing on the defenders. He is a little shorter than most goalkeepers, but that only matters to a certain degree, as he has very quick reflexes.
“However, foreign goalkeepers tend to take a little while to adapt to Serie A and he has to improve when coming off his line. If Ospina is able to settle in quickly, he can be a great addition to the squad.”
Reina had spent nine years at Liverpool before moving overseas to join Napoli. The Spaniard currently plays for Milan and still has a special place in Anfield’s hearts. He spent eight seasons as the no.1 and won three Premier League Golden Glove awards. The Golden Glove is usually presented to the player who kept the highest number of clean sheets.
Coming back to Ospina, one can be sure that the goalkeeper can prop up their defense further. He was even part of the Colombian squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. He pulled off many saves, even helping the team reach the Round of 16.
