In a candid interview ahead of the World Cup kick-off, Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea stated that his side has done their homework on Cristiano Ronaldo. Spain takes on Portugal on the opening day of the World Cup in an eagerly awaited Group B fixture.

Talking to Madrid based media-outlet Marca, De Gea said,” We are already focused on the World Cup, which is what matters now, we shouldn’t think about anything else.” He refused to be baited into whether Cristiano Ronaldo could be the biggest challenge for his side, and instead stated,” Cristiano Ronaldo is well studied, and everyone knows he’s one of the best in the world. He also has a great team behind him, they’re European champions and it will be a tough game.”

Ronaldo has had yet another successful campaign with Real Madrid while David de Gea finished second in the Premier League with Manchester United and also won the Golden Glove. The Portuguese ended his club campaign with 44 goals and 8 assists and is raring to add the World Cup medal to his already glittering trophy cabinet. Spain could end up missing striker Diego Costa for the game as he sustained an injury last night during training. However, they have a coterie of world-class attackers who can more than make up for his absence.

The two countries share a historic rivalry that now extends into football. Speaking on the same, the former Atletico Madrid man declared,”The first match is always important, and more so when it is against a rival as hard and complicated as Portugal. We have to face the game as we did in the qualifying phase, that is, playing our own game.”

The game kicks off on the 15th of June at 11:30 pm IST. Keep watching this space for more updates on the same.
