Garbine Muguruza made one of the most stunning comebacks in recent tennis history. After having a dismal 2019, that saw her finish as the world number 36 in the world rankings, the former Wimbledon champion started off 2020 with a bang.

The Spanish star made it to the finals of the Australian Open, contrary to popular expectations. While many were shocked, some claimed that they saw this resurgence coming.

A primary reason behind this belief was her reunion with long time friend and coach Conchita Martinez. She trained with Muguruza in the offseason and helped her in removing the chinks in her armour. Among other things, Conchita made Muguruza focus on her net game.

In an interview with AS magazine, Muguruza reflected on her relationship with Conchita Martinez.

What Did Garbine Muguruza Say About Conchita Martinez?

Garbine Muguruza reflected on the first meeting between her and Martinez –

“Well, first we have to talk about how I got to know her, I think I was between 14 and 15 years old when I first met her. So many years have passed. From the first moment, we had a lot of complicities and good relationship. Through all these years, it has been improving. Also when she was captain of the Fed Cup. We talked. Of course, we share. We have good energy together. So it’s very good.”

The next question to Muguruza was very interesting. She was asked about the nature of her relationship with Muguruza. Is it a sisterly relation or more of a coach-pupil dynamic? Let’s find out –

“No. I think I see her as a legend, as someone from whom I have to learn a lot because she has been in exactly the same situations, only with 15 years more experience. So definitely not a sister. Simply more like a true coach.”
