Seeded sixth at the 2009 US Open, DelPo made it to the final against Roger Federer, but not before defeating Rafael Nadal in the semifinal. He then put on a masterful display against Roger and defeated the Swiss in a five-set encounter. He thus became the first man since David Nalbandian to beat Federer at the US Open. He finished the year inside the top 10 players, making him the youngest at the time.

In 2010, DelPo injured his wrists for the first time, and though he played at the Australian Open, he was knocked off in the fourth round. He remained injured for nine months, and his rankings dropped past 250. In 2011, he returned to the tour, and though he couldn’t win any majors, he finished as the number 11 player in the world, making him the ATP Comeback Player of the Year. His biggest achievement in 2012 came at the London Olympics, where he bagged a bronze medal for Argentina. Andy Murray bagged the gold medal, while Roger Federer had to settle for a silver medal. A semifinal at Wimbledon, along with four titles, helped DelPo make it to the top 5 again in 2013, but the following year he witnessed a second wrist injury that kept him out of action for two years. He missed a major part of the 2014 and 2015 seasons, only to make a stronger return in 2016. After a gap of nine years, DelPo enjoyed success on the tour, winning a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics but losing to Andy Murray in the final.
