For the first time in his career, Juan Martin del Potro has reached the top-three rankings. He achieved this feat after Alexander Zverev failed to defend his Rogers Cup title. The 29-year old Argentine peaked at world No. 4 in 2010 and again in 2014.

Unfortunately, a series of injuries forced him down the ATP rankings. However, he has slowly built himself back up the pecking order having fallen outside the world’s top-1000 at the beginning of 2016 and sits behind Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer despite not playing a match this week.

Zverev tumbled to fourth spot after a defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals in Toronto. Though he slipped in the main rankings, Zverev remains second in the Race To London. Federer’s withdrawal from the Rogers Cup saw him stay behind the German 21-year-old, although he will have an opportunity to move back in front in Cincinnati.

Nadal leads the race and has already confirmed participant in the top-eight players who will compete at the ATP Finals in London. In the WTA rankings, Simona Halep remains top dog after her victory over Sloane Stephens in Montreal.

Her 7-6 (8-6) 3-6 6-4 win over the American leaves her nearly 2000 points ahead of world No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki, with Stephens operating at a career high No. 3. Caroline Garcia also reached a career high No. 5 as Elina Svitolina failed to defend her Rogers Cup title.

Now, all the players will be gearing up for the US Open at the end of the month. Who will emerge triumphant? only time will tell.
