Roger Federer has come close in 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2009, but couldn’t complete the milestone.

In the Open Era, Rod Laver is the only player to have won all four Grand Slam titles in the same calendar year. Federer has time and again tried to achieve this feat. In 2004, he won Australian Open, Wimbledon, and US Open, but couldn’t stake his claim for the French Open title. The Swiss Masters had lost in the third round of the 2004 French Open.

Federer hit his prime in 2006 and 2007. By the end of 2005, he was miles ahead of his rivals. From Wimbledon 2005 to US Open 2007, Federer reached 10 consecutive finals. He won eight Grand Slams in that period.

Roger Federer tries again in 2009 to win the Calendar Slam

Fast forward to 2009, Federer again produced his finest tennis. That year again he reached all four Grand Slam finals but triumphed in only two. Federer did complete a career slam as he finally won the French Open, but prior to that Rafa Nadal defeated him at the 2009 Australian Open.

Federer won the Wimbledon in 2009 but fell short to a 20-year-old Juan Martin del Potro. This was the last year Federer reached all the Grand Slam finals in a calendar year.

Novak Djokovic reached all Grand Slam finals in 2015

The other player other than Federer and Rod Laver to reach all four Grand Slam finals in a year was Novak Djokovic. In 2015, Djokovic reached all four Grand Slam finals. Djokovic won the 2015 Australian Open against Andy Murray and the Wimbledon and US Open against Federer. But he lost the French Open to Stan Wawrinka.

2015-2016 Novak Djokovic held all the Grand Slams

But later, Djokovic achieved something that his rivals haven’t. In 2016, Djokovic held all four Grand Slam at once. He won the 2015 Wimbledon and US Open, then he defended his Australian Open title in 2016, and then finally won the French Open against Andy Murray.

Here, he completed his career Grand Slam as well as became the second player after Rod Laver to win four Grand Slams in a row. He didn’t do it in the same year, but across the second half of 2015 and the first half of 2016.
