World No.5 Dominic Thiem parted ways with coach Thomas Muster at the Australian Open 2020 after working for just a couple of weeks together. The two started their partnership before coming to Melbourne. However, why did the pair ended their relationship in such a short span of time? Thiem reveals.

The No.5 seed topped Taylor Fritz 6-2, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-4 to reach the round of 16 of the Australian Open 2020 for the second time on Saturday. However, his alternate coach Thomas Muster was missing from his cheering box at the Margaret Court Arena on Saturday. After the match, Thiem revealed that the two went their separate ways as ‘things just did not work out.’

Austria’s only Grand Slam singles winner Thomas Muster joined Thiem’s team headed by Nicolas Massu for the major tournaments in 2020. However, the 26-year-old confirmed speculations about a possible end to their collaboration. It just didn’t fit, said the Austrian.

“We ended our working relationship. It did not fit. It’s easy like that. It is just about work. We get along well personally and we said in the beginning. If anything is not alright we will tell each other,” the two-time French Open finalist said in the post-match press conference.

Earlier this month, Muster captained Austria at the inaugural ATP Cup 2020, where Thiem posted a 1-2 win-loss record to open his 2020 campaign. However, Thiem had said that Thomas would guide him for 20 weeks on the ATP Tour in 2020. On the other hand, the 52-year-old suggested that Thiem was the only player he would have coached.

Thiem and Nicolas Massu partnership

The Austrian star will continue to work with head coach Nicolas Massu, who has been guiding Thiem since about a year.

In February 2019, Thiem began working with Massu. The two got along with each other quickly and were on the same wavelength as Thiem went on to capture his first ATP Masters 1000 title at Indian Wells. The Chilean then became Thiem’s primary coach after he parted ways with mentor Gunter Bresnik in April.
