After a successful run in the 2020 season, Austria’s Dominic Thiem is back at home. Keen on a full battery recharge, the 24-year-old also aims for a bigger next season.

He won his maiden major tournament, the US Open, in New York this year, and he reached the finals in Australia. About next year, the World No. 3 said, “I have big goals for 2021.”

Apart from the ATP World Tour, Thiem has added two major competitions to his 2021 calendar. They are the Olympics Summer Games in Tokyo and the Rod Laver Cup in Boston. While Thiem dreams of winning a medal for his country, he also wants to complete a hat-trick in the Laver Cup.

“Atmosphere at the Olympics must be unique”: Thiem

Taking after his coach Nicolas Massu – a two-time Olympic gold medallist, Thiem will represent his country on the greatest platform. The Swiss maestro Roger Federer has also shown interest in competing again at the Olympics.

Thiem confirmed, “I am going to participate at the Olympic Summer Games in Tokyo starting on July 23! I have been thinking about it for a longer period of time, and next year it eventually fits into my tournament schedule.”

Thiem added, “For an athlete, the atmosphere at the Olympics must be unique, I want to soak it all up.”

Along with his participation in Tokyo, Dominic will compete for a third straight win in the Laver Cup.

As Federer leads the new generation of players in the tournament, it is also a learning tournament for Thiem. Currently, only two players are booked in for Team Europe – Thiem and Federer.
