Dominic Thiem Rallies Past Stefanos Tsitsipas to Claim China Open 2019

No.1 seed Dominic Thiem battles through Stefanos Tsitsipas after a set down to defeat him 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 in 2 hours and 15 minutes and win his fourth title of the 2019 season at the China Open 2019 finals on Sunday.

Set one

The battle of single-handed backhands begun with Dominic Thiem breaking Stefanos Tsitsipas to love in his opening service game of the match. With a double error, Thiem also gifted his first serve game as Tsitsipas was back on serve.

The first hold of the match went for Tsitsipas as he claimed two games in a row. The two players showcased some excellent shots but were also very prone to error.

Dominic Thiem made three forehand errors and had to fend off two break points at 3-4. However, the Austrian defended both the breakpoints before his forehand landed on the net and the Greek claimed the second break of the set.

What a volley!!!

Thiem saved a set point and earned a breakpoint when Tsitsipas was serving for the set. However, the 21-year-old played three perfect forehands and secured the opening set 6-3 after 43 minutes.

Set two

Both players sealed their serve games to love at the start of the second set. In the third game of the set, Thiem was annoyed about his weak 1st serve percentage – which was below 60 percent.  Tsitsipas then transformed the breakpoint in his turn with an overhead ball to be on the driver seat with a set and a break up.

Dominic Thiem was back in the set with a rebreak. The Greek despair of a simple mistake and then served a double fault to gift a game to his opponent.

In the next game, Thiem fought the breakpoint with an ace and his aggressive play rewarded him as he scored three points in a row and held a crucial serve game.

Perfect lob!!!

Dominic Thiem had three breakpoint opportunities and all three times, Tsitsipas took pace from the service, came on the net, and played the volley well away. The Austrian scold and screamed as he lost the game.

Thiem frustrated with missed opportunities –

The No.1 seed then fought hard on a breakpoint with an unreal half-volley and held his serve game. The world No.5 hit a forehand winner and a backhand winner to earn three set points on Tsitsipas serve at 4-5. He secured the set 6-4 in 54 minutes and force the match to the deciding set.

Stefanos Tsitsipas tried his slow serve and volley, but Thiem conquered him on the net several times in a row and earned three breakpoints. After squandering the three breakpoints, Thiem forced Tsitsipas to make a mistake on the net and earned a break on his opening service game of the third set.

He then broke back and held his serve to get a lead comfortable lead of 5-0 in the deciding set. He then made no mistakes while serving for the match at 5-1 as he won the finals set 6-1 and claimed the China Open 2019 title.
