The fourth seed at the US Open 2019, Dominic Thiem flew to New York after pulling out from the Cincinnati Open 2019 due to illness. Upon landing at Flushing Meadows, the Austrian star said, “I’m feeling better, physically not nearly at 100%, but I will play on Tuesday for sure. Whether it will be successful or not, I don’t know.”

Skeptical about his performance in New York, the reigning quarterfinalist at the American major Dominic Thiem lost to Thomas Fabbiano 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the opening round of the US Open 2019 in the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

With the World Number Four, Thiem’s upset at the New York major, it uncomplicates the second seed, Rafael Nadal‘s route at the US Open 2019. With Thiem falling in Rafa’s half, they were potential semifinal opponents at the Flushing Meadows major. After Thiem getting ousted in the opening round, the Spaniard ace would play a lower-seeded opponent in the semifinals.

In the first set, Thiem experienced a break down situation at 2-1 and with further consolidation, Fabbiano sealed the set, 6-4. In the entire match, Dominic Thiem had a poor control on converting the break points.

Thiem converted just one break point out of the ten he faced. He pulled off one service game of his first-round opponent and that further helped him to get hold of the second set. The 25-year-old, Dominic Thiem slammed 17 winners to 28 unforced errors in the last two sets and was inconsistent with his backhand.
