The New York Open was in the headlines today for all the wrong reasons. Tempers flared in the first round match between Donald Young and Ryan Harrison, mid-way through the first set. The match was interesting and competitive as Harrison won it in straight sets. Harrison seemed to take it in a lighter stride after the match.

He said, ‘We both started at a very young age on tour, we both have a lot of pressure and expectations on ourselves that we’ve been dealing with for a long time. Like I said, I’ve been really fortunate to have fought through a lot of the adversity and Donald, I think, is trying to fight through the adversity. He’s trying to break back in to where he wants to be. But at the end of the day, you’re competitors out there. If that happened on a football field, people would probably just laugh and say “15-yard penalty and move on” but it is what it is and you move forward and you try to take it in stride.

I’m shocked and disappointed, Ryan Harrison, to hear you tell me how you really feel about me as a black tennis player in the middle of our NY match. I thought this was supposed to be an inclusive gentleman’s sport.

Ryan Harrison however replied and was quick to deny the allegations made by his opponent. Harrison also asked for proof, and stated that any video or audio clip from the moment of madness in the match will clarify that he is being wrongly accused. This is what he had to say in reply to Donald Young’s post:

The accusations made by Donald Young tonight following our match are absolutely untrue. I’m extremely disappointed that someone would say this in reaction to a lost tennis match. Any video/audio will 100% clear me and I encourage anyone with the available resources to find it.
