“Don’t Know What’s Going On”: Iga Swiatek Breaks Down After Clinching French Open 2020 Title

Polish teenager Iga Swiatek won her first-ever Grand Slam title at the French Open 2020. Swiatek defeated World No.6 Sofia Kenin in straight sets to become the youngest player to lift the Suzanne Lenglen Cup since Monica Seles in 1992. Iga also created history by becoming the first Polish player to win a Grand Slam title.
Swiatek broke Kenin’s serve early in the opening set to race to a 3-0 lead. The No.4 seed Kenin broke back immediately and won her next two service games to level the first set 3-3. The players displayed some exquisite shot play during the 9-minute long eighth game, which Swiatek won after securing the third break point off Kenin’s serve.
The cat-and-mouse chase continued with Swiatek, eventually wrapping up the first set 6-4.

In the second set, Kenin took an injury timeout to treat the discomfort on her strapped left thigh. The reigning Australian Open could not change gears and gave Swiatek an unassailable 4-1 lead. The 19-year-old, Swiatek, hit a powerful cross-court forehand winner to clinch the Roland Garros title.
During the on-court interview, Swiatek thanked her family and reflected on her journey from winning the junior singles championship at 2018 Wimbledon to becoming a Grand Slam champion.
“I don’t know what’s going on. I’m so happy. I’m so happy my family was here finally. I don’t know. It was overwhelming for me. Two years ago I won a junior grand slam and now I’m here. It feels like such a short time. I’m just overwhelmed,” said Swiatek.

Iga Swiatek lifts maiden Grand Slam trophy
Iga choked up while talking about her father and revealed that she learned professionalism from him. Swiatek became emotional and said, “He gave us everything … I’m sorry, it’s hard to say. But I love him.”

Swiatek had never gone past the fourth round in her previous six Grand Slam appearances and rushed to celebrate with her team in the player’s box.

It was the duo’s first-ever match against each other on the women’s tour. Previously, they had squared off in the third round of the 2016 French Open Juniors, which Kenin won in two sets.
