Marcos Baghdatis had a  successful career reaching the finals of 2006 Australian open and a ranking of world no. 8. He retired this year at the Wimbledon. Clearly, he couldn’t leave tennis completely. On 11th December 2019 he announced that he would be coaching Elina Svitolina  for the 2020 season through his Twitter account. He said,

“I am so glad to announce the next chapter of my life and look forward to Coaching a great athlete and super tennis player No.6 ranked WTA player Elina Svitolina, working along side Andre Bettles! I want to thank Elina for putting her trust in me. Lets do this! Bring it on 2020.”

Elina Svitolina also shared this amazing news through her twitter account by posting a picture of her coaching team which included Marcos Baghdatis.“ Teamwork gives you the best opportunity to turn vision into reality. ” she said.

Elina Svitolina’s 2019 season had its positives and negatives. She reached her first Grand Slams semifinals at the Wimbledon and the US Open this year but she failed to win a single title this year.

She will definitely not be happy with that especially when she look at her season in 2018 where she won 4 titles which included the prestigious WTA Finals. She will be looking to improve her record in 2020.

2020 is also the year of the Olympics. She has expressed her desire to play at the Olympics despite the ongoing controversy with The Ukrainian Tennis Federation. The addition of Marcos Baghdatis to the coaching team is probably for this reason.

She will not only be aiming for an Olympic Gold next year, she will also be aiming to win a Grand Slam singles title. She will become the first Ukrainian to do either one of those and that is a goal she will be hoping to attain with the help of Marcos Baghdatis.
