Resident Evil Reaches Landmark in Sales

Capcom has been around for almost 4 decades now. Over the years, they have come up with many fan-favorite titles. And now, the Resident Evil series has hit a record by exceeding 100 million sales worldwide. 

Resident Evil – the journey

The series started off in 1996. Resident Evil, owned by, Capcom follows the story of a Zombie outbreak among other monsters created by the Umbrella Corporation. It is a Survival horror that keeps the players on the edge of their seats.

Now the series has more to give with thrilling action, exploration, and puzzle-solving. It drew heavy inspiration from horror and action films. The franchise already held the record for the highest-grossing film series based on a video game. Now they have another record to their name.

The game known as Biohazard in Japan surprisingly raised 80% of its sale from outside Japan. Capcom pursued a digital sales strategy in recent times; extending the life of games with flexible pricing.

The developers mention that the 100 million sales milestone was possible because of a number of factors. They had a consistent release schedule for new titles and came up with a couple of remakes for their old titles; RE 2 and 3.

Capcom going forward wants to grow its franchise further by launching games on next-gen platforms. They have also pledged to create highly entertaining gameplay experiences to satisfy the expectations of their fanbase.

The new Resident Evil title

The series so far had seven main titles, with the 8th one being announced during the PS5 launch event. Other spin-offs to the game and remakes also added to the sales. The new title named Resident Evil ‘Village’ is a sequel to the 2017 Resident Evil 7 Biohazard.

Resident Evil Village starts a few years after Biohazard. The game will continue the story of Ethan Winters and Mia as things go wayward again. The game will be in first-person and is set to feature Werewolves and Vampires among other supernatural creatures. Chris Redfield, a character well-known to RE fans, also makes a return.
