PlayStation 5 Leak Suggests Backwards Compatibility

The inflow of news from the console arena seems never-ending as the dust settles and we inch closer to the launch dates following the explosive reveals of Sony’s PlayStation 5. New leaks suggest that the PS5 might support backwards compatibility, unlike what Sony had previously stated.

However, there are no official statements on this regard yet. When we say backwards compatibility, it does not mean that PS5 will support games from PS3, PS2 or earlier.

This is unlike what Xbox is offering its consumers; the Xbox Series X will reportedly support backwards compatibility across all generations of its consoles.

They have even figured out the space management in this regard, as there are a whole host of games across these generations that Xbox promises its consumers, they can play on the next-gen console.

In an interview with the Washington Post last month, CEO Jim Ryan spoke about backwards compatibility in PS5.

“Ryan also said that of the thousands of games tested for PS4 backwards compatibility, “99 per cent” can be played on the next console. Sony also announced a new service called PS Plus Collection, which will offer 18 PS4 first-party titles for download to subscribers to the PlayStation online service,” wrote the daily.

As reported by Screenrant, Reddit user Kgarvey posted a few error messages from the PlayStation Store webpage which triggered more discussion.

“playing PS4 games on PS5, some functionalities available on PS4 may not be available. See www.playstation.com/ps5-backwards-compatibility for more details.” (dead link, currently)
“This PS4 game isn’t supported with your PS5’s current system software. We’re continuing to make more PS4 games playable on PS5. Update your PS5, and then try playing the game”
“This PS4 game isn’t supported with your PS5’s current system software. We’re continuing to make more PS4 games playable on PS5. Update your PS5, and then try playing the game.”

The leak further talks about devs having the ability to use haptic feedback on PS4 titles. This leak can confirm that not all PS4 games are being made available on PS5. Sony has provided no comments on this particular leak.

PlayStation is set to launch worldwide on November 12th. It is priced at $399 and $499.
