HBO’s The Last of Us series has been a phenomenon in modern-day television. Accumulating overwhelming responses from high-profile critics all over the board, as well as loyal fans. Not only was it a critical success but also a commercial mega-hit. In the initial broadcast of the first season, it has already managed to break platform records

Based on Naughty Dog studio’s Magnum Opus gaming series, The Last of Us tells an unlikely father-daughter duo’s journey of survival in a broken world. Though the games’ extensive and loyal fan base who were very concerned about the adaptation, HBO’s television series has managed to do it justice.

The effort that the showrunners and the cast put into the show was very apparent and appreciated by the audience. The season finale, successfully accumulated over 8.5 million views, just in its Sunday night premiere, becoming the most-watched episode premiere of the show and one of the biggest in HBO history.

According to the data, the first six episodes of the series are all now averaging 30.4 million viewers. Which is more than The Game of Thrones’ spin-off the ‘House of the Dragon’. Being one of the biggest shows on HBO, HoD had a peak average viewership of 29 million, which is not a small amount but also not enough to compete with the LoU.

According to revealed data and reports, episode-wise premiere viewership of the Last of Us is: 

Episode 1 – 4.7m

Episode 2 – 5.7m

Episode 3 – 6.4m

Episode 4 – 7.5m

Episode 5 – 11.6m* (early premiere, includes data from Fri-Sun)

Episode 6 – 7.8m

Episode 7 – 7.7m

Episode 8 – 8.1m

Episode 9 – 8.2m

(This data is based on the Sunday premier viewer count. Because of the early Friday release of Episode 5, the viewer count from Friday to Sunday was summed together)  

Episode 1 of the series is currently on the verge of reaching 40 million total views since its initial broadcast. In Latin America and Europe, The Last of Us has become the biggest show in the history of HBO Max.
