If no team were to offer Sergio Perez a seat for next season, the Abu Dhabi GP would be Perez’s last race of the season; or potentially, his Formula 1 career. This realization dawned upon all F1 fans as he crossed the finish line and won the Sakhir GP.

His performances in the last few races have highlighted his true ability and character. This is exactly the reason it is still a mystery how such a capable driver is still without a seat for the next year.

However, the Mexican driver is unfazed by the prospects of what might come in the future. In addition, he believes that since fate is not in his own hands, all he can do is continue delivering and pushing on the track.

Sakhir GP winner Sergio Perez believes that ‘it is just the way Formula 1 is’

Perez is quoted as saying, “The regulations are going to change so much that, in a way, I don’t think it will hurt that much the driving side, to get up to speed.

“I’m at peace with myself. I think Esteban [Ocon has] mentioned that drivers like him missing out on seats, it’s just the way Formula 1 is.”

As has been in the news for some time now, Red Bull Racing represents the 30-year-old’s best opportunity for next season. If not that, Perez is equally ready to take a sabbatical in 2021 and then assess his options ahead of 2022.

“It can be really tough and not the best drivers are in Formula 1 unfortunately. So we keep pushing and we keep delivering and I think that’s the best way to do it,” concluded Perez.

It is almost unheard of to see an F1 driver climb up from being dead last on the grid to secure a race victory. Following damage on the first lap with Charles Leclerc, there was a sense that Perez had to satisfy himself with a decent points finish.

One can argue that several factors paved the way for the Mexican’s victory at Sakhir. Then again, to be able to position oneself in the race and capitalize on those chances is also quite crucial.

The ability to soak in the pressure and keep extracting performance is eventually what landed him the race victory. However, only time will tell if that is good enough for him to get an F1 seat.
