Returning to F1 after 6 decades, Aston Martin has not fulfilled its ambitions so far. Aiming at becoming the top team in the pinnacle of motorsport, the team has invested a lot in its infrastructure. Though, so far, the last 2 seasons have yielded underwhelming results for them. Still, the Silverstone outfit looks to challenge the status quo of the pecking order on the F1 grid in 2023. Under the leadership of ex-Red Bull man Dan Fallows, Aston Martin hopes that its AMR23 will be a positive step toward becoming a top team.

Aston Martin looks quite optimistic about the start of a positive trajectory with the AMR23. They put out a statement of the various reasons they can take a step forward in the new season. This also revealed a detailed game plan about how the 2023 car can start Aston’s climb up the F1 ladder.

Aston Martin’s official website stated, “Relentless in the pursuit of performance, we’ve recruited a number of skilled people to strengthen and complement our talented workforce over the past couple of years.” Hiring Dan Fallows from Red Bull racing was perhaps a masterful move by the Green team.

Fallows had been a major influence on the championship-winning RB16B car for 2021 at Milton Keynes. And Aston Martin is positive about his excellent contribution to the AMR23 car.

The statement further stated, “The AMR23 is the first Aston Martin F1 car to be designed under the watch of Technical Director Dan Fallows and Deputy Technical Director Eric Blandin – the team has been working on the car for months and has been aggressive with its design.”

The amount of development the team did in the 2nd half of last season was stupendous. So, it seems Fallows’ experience may also be quite beneficial to bridge the gap from the midfield to the top in the next few years. Still, it will require a combination of technical development, infrastructure, and good drivers for Aston Martin to succeed in F1 in the future.

What is the Realistic Expectation for Aston Martin for 2023?

Given its 2021 and 2022 setbacks, Aston Martin would love to not make a hat trick of setbacks in 2023. After having signed up Fernando Alonso, the team would hope to give him a decent car with the AMR23. They know how Alonso can squeeze out the maximum performance from any car and boost their season’s performance.

Still, looking at their last season’s journey, they started 2022 as probably the second-slowest car on the grid. But, since their new design in Spain, the AMR22 evolved well to end the season strongly. Aston Martin almost beat Alfa Romeo to 6th place in the constructors, only if it wasn’t for Valtteri Bottas’ 5th-place finish in Imola.

So, given this steep development curve; Aston Martin may be optimistic about recreating the same trajectory for 2023. Having Alonso in the car, if they can develop a decent mid-field contender through the year, the Spaniard can take the fight to Alpine and McLaren.

It may be still a steep ask to fight for the best of the rest spot in P4. But, if Aston is looking to be in the top 3 soon, they have to take a shot at this midfield jump. McLaren and Alpine still have better prospects of being the midfield leaders this season. Yet, Aston can look to have an outside chance.
