Bitter After Humiliating Defeat, Lewis Hamilton Steals Credit From Fernando Alonso With Brutal Jab

Last week’s Bahrain Grand Prix was a tale of extremes. On the one hand, a team like Aston Martin which had been languishing in the lower berths of the midfield for the past couple of years stood on a Formula 1 podium, on merit. And on the flip side, a dominant Mercedes, who created a turbo-hybrid dynasty in the sport, finally accepted defeat as they slumped even further in the pecking order after 2022’s regulation change. For 7x champion, Lewis Hamilton, this would’ve been a bitter pill to swallow. Adding insult to injury, his arch-nemesis and old foe, Fernando Alonso was the architect of Aston Martin’s success.
In a weird mix of hope and denial, Hamilton went on a post-race rant against his own team while taking a swipe at Aston Martin. The Silverstone-based team is a customer team of the Silver Arrows. That means in addition to the Mercedes power unit in the back of the AMR23, the team also buys other components, such as the entire rear suspension and gearbox. This is exactly what Hamilton was referring to while seemingly diluting the meaning of this historic moment for Alonso and the team.
While speaking to the world’s media after the Bahrain GP, Hamilton said, “Hats off to Aston Martin, they’ve done an incredibly good job. We have a lot of work ahead of us, because half of their car is ours!” [translated via Google Translate]

After the pre-season test, Mercedes fans were still hopeful for a resurgence. However, what ensued in the Grand Prix held at the Sakhir International Circuit has finally snapped them back to reality. Mercedes were woefully lagging in pace as compared to the Ferraris and Red Bulls.
When talking about their woes, Hamilton revealed, “Ferrari was simply faster than us. We are the fourth fastest team at the moment.”
