Nico Hulkenberg had quite the weekend at the 2020 British Grand Prix. From receiving a surprise call-up to replace Sergio Perez at Racing Point, to not starting the race, Nico went through all the emotions.

With Perez having completed his quarantine period, Hulkenberg faces the probability of being left out, a negative COVID-19 test is all that Perez needs to lead Hulkenberg to the chopping block.

It would be extremely unfortunate for Hulkenberg if he doesn’t get to race. In many ways, it could be considered a futile effort for the German. After all, he went through a lot of trouble to turn up in Britain last weekend.

However, the man himself doesn’t seem to think so. Contrarily, the trip to England may as well have given him another lifeline in as far as his future in Formula 1 is concerned.

According to Autosport, Hulkenberg revealed that he has held discussions with certain teams about his future in the sport.

The German said, “I’ve been in contact with quite a few people from the F1 industry, and team principals because obviously we know each other.

“Some is just casual chat, some is more about the future subject. So I’m definitely in discussions and in talks there, but nothing to say concrete yet there. I guess it’s still a matter of a couple of weeks before things will get a bit more concrete and firm.”

However, he also acknowledges the fact that he knew he came in as a back-up for Perez. He said, “Yeah, obviously that would be of course somewhat disappointing, after having been back in the car and getting a taste of it and then this.

“But obviously it was always clear that I come in as a temporary replacement for Checo. Not knowing if it’s one race, two races, or what. So obviously he’s the main driver and whenever he’s good to race again, he’ll be back.”

It’s a pity the way Hulkenberg’s British Grand Prix ended even before it started. Nearly the whole F1 world was united in hoping that he would score his maiden podium. Let’s hope the ‘Hulk’ gets another shot in F1.

After all, it would be a shame to see such a talented driver retire without a single podium to his name.
