On a summer afternoon with suited track conditions, one driver that tried to make the most of it and have some fun at Mugello was Daniil Kvyat. Despite putting in a tremendous effort in his last lap in Q2, Kvyat found himself knocked out. But the Russian driver was not very pessimistic and saw the lighter side of things.

He will be starting P12 in the AlphaTauri at the Tuscan GP. “Obviously my final lap was pretty clean, pretty strong.” On being asked about tomorrow’s race, he was heard saying, “We will see. We have a lot of questions before the race. Obviously, we have to try and find the answers tomorrow during the race and try to do something different”.

Kvyat did however manage to qualify higher up than the Monza race winner and his teammate, Pierre Gasly. Gasly picked up a lot of understeer on his first lap during Q1 and was heard on the radio.

Despite his unrelenting efforts, Kvyat could not find his way past the drop zone and will start in P16 tomorrow. But the AlphaTauri drivers do have a reputation of picking up points, and so they will be looking to tap into this reserve to unearth some motivation.

The Red Bull Junior Driver program rewards consistency alongside talent. And with Kvyat not exactly showing that he can steer past to deliver the occasional good performance, the Austrian outfit might be looking at Yuki Tsunoda from their junior team in the Formula 2 Championship to be working alongside Pierre Gasly come next season.

For the time being, Kvyat is set to start tomorrow and show that he is a driver worthy of retaining his seat.
