Former F1 driver and 2009 World Champion Jenson Button believes Sebastian Vettel will bounce back from his current slump. The Briton backed Vettel to learn from his mistakes made last season and compete at a higher level. The 4 times World Champion was outscored by his teammate for only the second time in his career in 2019.

Button backs Sebastian Vettel

2019 was a difficult year for the German driver. Having painfully lost out to Lewis Hamilton for the World Championship, Vettel had to make amends early on in the season. The Tifosi were starting to lose faith and a rising star had just come into the team. Vettel had his back firmly against the wall and needed to deliver under any circumstance.

Unfortunately, that never happened. Whenever Vettel struggled, Leclerc shined and the tide was turning at Ferrari. Sadly, Seb had gone from being a team leader to fighting for his seat in 2021. Ferrari singing Leclerc for another 5 years didn’t do anything to ease Vettel’s pain.

The 4 times World Champion’s contract with the Scuderia expires at the end of 2020. Ferrari has claimed that Vettel is a priority for the second seat but no announcements have been made from either party.

If and when racing eventually resumes, Vettel’s only goal should be that of redemption. The German showed signs of his former self in the latter half of 2019 but mechanical issues plagued his chances of a good result.

Button believes Vettel’ current slump will only make him a stronger driver. Speaking to Sky Sports, Jenson Button said:

“I think he has made some silly mistakes, which I’m sure he will say are silly mistakes as well”

“But I also think he will come out the other side of this as a better driver, I really do.

“So I really think he will come back stronger.

“He has immense talent and we will see that once we get racing.”

Button earlier predicted Vettel and Leclerc to get along in 2020 and work as a unit to end Mercedes domination.

With Ferrari having signed the Monegasque on a long-term deal, Vettel can go all out with very little to lose. At the end of the season, Vettel can hopefully signal those famous digits instead of leaving empty-handed.
