While there are many people wondering when George Russell will go to Mercedes for good, there is one important question that hasn’t made its way into people’s minds yet – what will happen to Russell’s seat at Williams? There is a chance of a direct swap between Mercedes and Williams, with Bottas going the other way. However, another option is that Williams F1 could look elsewhere for someone to partner Nicholas Latifi. Apparently, a certain Nico Hulkenberg could be one of the drivers in line.

According to F1 journalist Lawrence Barretto, there are several drivers on the shortlist. For the moment, that list includes the likes of Nico Hulkenberg, Pierre Gasly, and Daniil Kvyat. Hulkenberg and Kvyat have been away from a racing seat for a while and will want to go racing once again. Admittedly, the former has been out of action relatively longer.

Gasly is in an interesting situation, especially if he becomes a free agent. At the moment, his options are to earn a promotion back to Red Bull or remain at AlphaTauri. If neither of those options work out or come to pass, he would be a person of interest for the Williams F1 team.

Aside from Nico Hulkenberg, Daniil Kvyat, and Pierre Gasly, who are the other options?

If Williams do not look in the direction of ex-F1 drivers, they may go down the younger route. As it turns out, F2 racer Dan Ticktum is a member of Williams’ driver academy. However, there are talks that he dropped out of the academy, and thus, it seems that his chances could be slim.

Another driver who could be in the running is Chinese youngster and F2 championship leader, Guanyu Zhou. However, his own options are also limited because of his Alpine Racing ties. So, if Fernando Alonso decides to retire from Formula One for good, Zhou could be in line to take his place in the near future.
