Scuderia Ferrari had a typically lopsided race in Russia. Charles Leclerc came home in a rather surprising P6 finish, whereas Sebastian Vettel finished the race in disappointing P13.

In a bid to improve their lackluster SF1000, the team confirmed that they’ll be bringing in new updates for the next race in Nurburgring, on the 11th of October.

Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto remained rather cryptic about what upgrades would be coming in. However, he did reveal what part of the car will get special attention for the remainder of the season.

Binotto said, “We have a few more upgrades in Nurburgring, but again not major. Still, for us, I think (they are) important considering the level of competitiveness. Then we’ll focus mainly on the diffuser for the remaining part of the season, but by when, it is not yet defined.”

The team ran new upgrades in Russia too. Specifically, new rear wing endplates, a new nose cap, and turning vanes. However, Leclerc said that it had only a marginal effect to his performance.

“Driving wise, it’s not a big difference. But the data says that it’s a small gain. So this is already positive,” said the Monegasque. “Now I’m looking forward to the next race where normally we’ll have something a bit bigger.”

Binotto also didn’t feel that the upgrades introduced in Sochi had a massive effect. He attributed Leclerc’s performance to the car being a better fit for the track.

He said, “I don’t think it’s down to the upgrades. Certainly, they helped, but that’s not the reason. “We have got a better balance here, with the track characteristics. Let’s hope that we found some competitiveness again.

“That gives the opportunity to the drivers to at least compete for a better position in the future.”

Leclerc is already doing a solid job of competing for positions, but the same can’t be said for his German colleague.

Vettel only has 17 points from the last 10 races. He’ll be hoping for the new upgrades to come through at the Nurburgring to save him from further disappointment.
