The second Sakhir Grand Prix will not see Lewis Hamilton fighting for another win. It is reported that Lewis Hamilton has tested positive for COVID-19 and will not be racing this weekend. Meanwhile, there are doubts regarding his presence at the Abu Dhabi race as well.

As per the FIA COVID-19 protocols, he will have to report a negative coronavirus result to return to the paddock. According to the protocols, he is now isolated from the rest of the drivers. All contacts have also been declared and FIA and Formula 1 are working towards limiting its impact to this weekend’s race.

So, the question is, who will replace the seven-time world champion this weekend? The reports suggest a couple of names that could take Hamilton’s place this weekend. Stoffel Vandoorne and Nico Hulkenberg could get a chance to prove themselves by driving the Silver Arrow.

Vandoorne shares the reserve driver role with Esteban Gutierrez. Gutierrez is a former Haas driver who has been working with Mercedes since 2018. However, Gutierrez may not replace Hamilton this weekend due to ambiguity over his super license.

The Mexican last competed in a Formula 1 race years ago. As per the rules, he must complete a test of 300kms in an F1 car for his super license.

Another possible replacement driver could be Nico Hulkenberg. Hulkenberg has already been used as a replacement in three different races replacing Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll. Therefore, the only viable options for Mercedes are Vandoorne and Hulkenberg.

Furthermore, the Brackley outfit also has George Russell within its ranks. However, the British driver relinquishing his role at Williams seems unlikely.

However, it is certain that whoever they choose as the replacement will have a challenging race weekend. The Silver Arrow is the fastest car on the grid and could provide a significant chance to claim a podium.
