The much-awaited season-decider concluded last night in Abu Dhabi, with Max Verstappen crowned as the 2021 F1 world champion. The race witnessed many controversial incidents, the biggest being right before the final lap. Lewis Hamilton was not a happy man for sure after losing out on his record 8th world title.

Former Australian motorsports driver Mark Webber recently hinted at possible retirement plans for Hamilton. Although he believes that the Briton is well-equipped to be a title contender in the coming seasons as well, the controversial end to the season finale might just push him towards walking away from the sport.

The Mercedes luminary has dominated the turbo-hybrid era like no other driver. He has won six out of the last eight championships. Webber believes that the Briton has a “good chance” of regaining his title in the upcoming season.

“I still think it will be Mercedes and Red Bull by the way [on top in 2022],” said the Aussie as reported by PlanetF1.

“But Hamilton, no question about it, he will be in for a big chance of going again next year,” he added.

In last-minute disarray, race control asked the five cars between the two title protagonists to unlap themselves and overtake the safety car. The race outcome was pretty much clear to the fans at that point. Lewis Hamilton had to defend Max Verstappen on his 40 laps old hard tires while the Dutchman was on new soft compound tires.

Hamilton might walk away from the sport

The British star is currently on a contract with the Mercedes team till the end of the 2023 season. However, the last-minute debacle for the Silver Arrows driver might leave him wondering about walking away from the sport. “What was interesting though, I remember hearing Roger Federer at the Australian Open one year saying borderline ‘I might see you next year'”, said the former Red Bull driver.
