Lando Norris is believed to be the chosen one for McLaren. The one who’ll bring the days of glory back to Wyoming, the one who’ll make it to the list of greats for the team, which includes the likes of Lewis Hamilton, Lauda, Senna, and Hakkinen. But, given the team’s recent struggles in developing a car that delivers performance, it all seems too far away.

Lando Norris is well-determined to win the drivers’ championship. But the driver, who signed a long-term contract with McLaren until the end of 2025, believes he has a meager chance of winning the title in 2024 or even 2025. However, he remains optimistic that he will have won his first race by then.

Recognizing what he needs to do by the end of his current deal with Wyoming, Norris, in a conversation with and quoted by GQ, said, “With everything I’ve learned, maybe I could win a race, but I’m unlikely to win a championship until possibly that time. I know I need to be at the absolute top of my game in those years.”

Norris has performed consistently for the team but has been unlucky on a few occasions where he could have won the race, which would have shot up his confidence. But his faith and goal remain strong as he says, “I’d like to get one of those,” pointing at the championship trophy.

McLaren reinforces trust in Lando Norris

Tagged as the ‘best of the rest’ behind Red Bull, Ferrari, and Mercedes, McLaren acknowledges it hasn’t supported its drivers well enough to compete for the championship. In a statement to GQ, McLaren’s CEO, Zak Brown, commented upon trusting Norris’ capability, saying, “I think he’s got another ten to 15 years ahead of him. I think as long as we can get him a car, he’ll be a world champion.”

Brown further complimented the maturity displayed by the young Briton, saying, “He takes the things that he needs to take seriously, very seriously. But he also knows that we’re in a fun business, racing cars,” as the team tries to raise morale before the next season.
