The Williams F1 team made tidal waves in the F1 paddock when the Williams family announced that they were leaving F1. In light of their impending departure, drivers George Russell and Nicholas Latifi paid tribute to the family.
Last week, a business management company, Dorilton Capital, completed a takeover of the team. After the 2020 Italian Grand Prix, Claire Williams will relinquish the deputy team principal role and the family will cease its involvement. Apparently, Russell and Latifi found out on Thursday morning, and both drivers were saddened by the news.
“Obviously it’s a sad day for us,” Russell said. “For me personally, Frank and Claire gave me my first opportunity in Formula 1. It’s something I am very thankful and grateful for, and having the opportunity to drive for such an amazing and prestigious team for the two years I’ve been here so far.”

The good news is that the team will still retain its name, though there are no clear plans on who will take the reins. Despite the speculation, George Russell is certain that whoever leads the team will ensure that it is in good hands.

“For Claire and the Williams family, the team means a huge amount to them, more than it does to anyone else,” Russell continued. “They would have not sold it to a company if they did not have faith that they have the team’s best interests at heart.”

Speaking of prospective Williams F1 team principals, Russell insists that F1 experience is not a major factor for any successor. The British driver cited the example of Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff. Wolff is one of the best examples, owing to his success at the head of the Mercedes team.
As per Russell, Wolff boasted of some motorsport experience, but never in Formula 1. In spite of this, the Austrian has done an excellent job with the German giants and helped turn them into a dominant force.
