Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton is yet to sign a new contract with the team that will keep him at the Brackley-based outfit beyond the 2020 season. The 6-times world champion has been absolutely immense ever since he joined Mercedes, and is currently on the hunt for his 7th title (6th with Mercedes). But Toto Wolff’s possible resignation from team principal duties has made fans wonder whether Lewis will continue with the team. However, Hamilton has put those questions to rest.

Valtteri Bottas has already been tied down for another season. But Hamilton has said that he is not in any hurry to sign a new contract. Hamilton cited the pandemic and the current financial situation around the world as a reason for the delay.

Commenting on Toto’s possible exit, Hamilton said, “What you’ve got to remember is that it’s a team of so many people. There’s almost 2,000 people in the team, or something like that. It’s not just down to one person, one individual. So yes, that’s not determining whether or not I stay. I think what we’ve built… I’ve been a part of growing with this team and growing with that growth. The strength is there through and through, so, as I said, it’s not just one individual. I think everyone has to do what’s best for them

He added, “I hope he stays because it’s fun working with him, and it’s fun negotiating with him and fun having the up and downs. So, I’m truly grateful to Toto and I’ll be fully supportive in whatever he decides to do.”

Lewis Hamilton Reveals Why He is Reluctant to Sign a New Contract With Mercedes F1

Bottas agreed with Hamilton on the same. Speaking on the same, he said, “I think Toto has been a really important part of the team and being a big part of helping the team to get to the state where it is now but just like Lewis said, it’s not all about one person, we’re a big team, there are so many important personnel in the team..”

He confirmed his presence in the team is not dependent on Wolff being around: “I would definitely sign with the team even though Toto wasn’t here because, as Lewis said, it’s not about one person but (he’s a) very important man.”

Hamilton, as you’d expect, bagged a pole at the Spanish Grand Prix. His teammate Valtteri Bottas will start tomorrow’s race in P2, finishing only 5 hundredths of a second behind Hamilton. It’s Mercedes’ 5th front-row lockout in 6 races.

After suffering tire trouble in the previous race, giving the chance for Max Verstappen to bag a win, Mercedes will be wary this time around. With track temperatures projected to be similar to last weekend, it’ll be interesting to see the strategy calls the Brackley-based outfit make this weekend.

Surely, they would have learned a thing or two from last weekend and would have made changes. Will Mercedes bounce back with a one-two? Or will Verstappen and Red Bull spring another surprise? All will be revealed in less than 24 hours.
