Lewis Hamilton brought his car home in P1 at the Nurburgring circuit last weekend. After the race, he mentioned that he knew Valtteri Bottas was graining his front tires; therefore, he decided to turn up the heat on the Finn who was leading the race. Eventually, he had a massive lock-up going into Turn 1 and gifted his lead to Lewis.

Martin Brundle, who witnessed the entire incident unfold and came across Lewis’ comments, felt that Lewis was driving two Mercedes at that point.

A classic comment of his [Lewis] on Sunday post-race was that he could see Valtteri Bottas was gaining his front tires at that point. And so he pushed,” Brundle told SkySportF1.

He was driving two Mercedes at that point. And sure enough under braking and also with a few spots of rain Valtteri locked his front wheel and ran wide.”

Like Brundle described, it was not a good weekend for Bottas. During the start, despite being pushed off the track going into Turn 1 by Lewis, Bottas managed to regain his lead.

But it was all for naught. Just laps after suffering the lock-up, his Power Unit conceded defeat and sent him to the paddocks with his head in his hands up.

Brundle concurred with Lewis Hamilton on his assessment

During the post-race press conference, Lewis complimented Bottas for his determination to regain the lead going into Turn 2 during the first lap. Brundle felt that it was just a consolation prize that Lewis gave to his teammate.

Valtteri made a comment that this gave Lewis advance warning of less grip. But whatever the circumstances Hamilton seized a lead he would not remotely relinquish despite ensuring safety cars,” Brundle said.

He threw Bottas a consolation prize after the race by complimenting his determination to regain the lead in turn 2 of the opening lap, which was indeed a fine piece of aggression and precision driving.”

Bottas’ retirement at Nurburgring meant that Lewis bolstered his lead over the Finn by a whopping 69 points. With just six more races to go, it would be a miracle if Bottas catches up with Lewis and wins the Championship title this year.
