Lewis Hamilton created a dynasty with Mercedes from 2014 to 2020. The turbo-hybrid era of this sport has been laced with the rich legacy the Silver Arrows have left with the 7x champion at the helm of the entire project. But all good things do eventually come to an end. That being said, what marks a legend is what they do when adversity comes knocking. Do you accept your fate? Or do you tempt it to write a legend of your own?

Many greats in this sport have faced these crossroads. Many decisions were made. Some materialized, and some didn’t. Now, on the cusp of his record-smashing 8th F1 driver’s title, Lewis Hamilton must make a bold choice. Loyalty or success.

With the advent of the new technical regulations of the sport, Mercedes has dropped the ball without a shadow of a doubt. Legendary commentator, Martin Brundle opined on the Sky Sports F1 podcast, “You know, [Ayrton] Senna left McLaren to go to Williams, [Michael] Schumacher went off to Ferrari and it took a long, long time, but he made that work. So these great drivers are not scared of going somewhere and then galvanising and getting a lot of new people around them and making something happen.”

But is Brundle a betting man? “I think there must be part of Lewis that thinks. I’d love to go to Ferrari and do a Michael Schumacher if I can’t win my eighth or ninth right now. Why don’t I go and have some fun there?”

When you think of Mercedes, you think of Lewis Hamilton, and vice versa. Naturally, there’s this certain loyalty pledged amongst them. But in a cutthroat sport like F1, loyalty can sometimes very easily waver.

Mercedes supremo, Toto Wolff doesn’t think that way though. He told Motorsport.com back in 2022, “Lewis and I, even if the season would have gone wrong, we would have at least under the principle of hope, stayed together next year. And [for] a couple of months, we’re talking [if] this going to go five or 10 years. So none of that is true.”
