Earlier this year, NFL superstar Tom Brady announced he was walking away from the sport after claiming 7 Super Bowls. The news devastated the football community, but it turned out to be an extremely short-lived retirement that ended in 40 days. As it is impossible to take out the hunger for winning from an athlete, the 44-year-old announced that he will return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the 2022/23 NFL season.

Along the same lines, the headline in the F1 paddock is the retirement of 15-year veteran Sebastian Vettel. The Aston Martin driver, who is in his last year of the contract, stunned the world by hanging up his race helmet instead of putting pen to paper for a 16th F1 season.

The four-time world champion (2010-2013), a living legend of the sport, competed at the top of the grid for a better part of the 2010s. However, he finds himself in an uncompetitive race car and has failed to replicate his former glory. Just like the multi-time NFL champion, the reason behind Vettel calling it quits is his motivation to spend more time with family than in competition.

Nonetheless, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Quarterback made his return to football and explained the decision He said, “I knew my body, physically, could still do what it could do and obviously I have a love for the game, I think I’ll always have a love for the game.”

“I do think physically I’ll be able to do it. I just felt like there was still a place for me on the field. At the end of the day, I just love the competition on the field,” he added.

All F1 enthusiasts could not digest his decision and can already feel how incomplete F1 would feel without him. Thus, they may be hoping that the same way Brady could not see himself in the grandstand instead of the field, Vettel cannot see himself anywhere but the F1 grid.

The Heppenheim-born racing driver is a crucial piece of the puzzle for Aston Martin. The team is on a quest to fight for race wins at every Grand Prix, and for that, an experienced campaigner comes in really handy. Following his retirement announcement, only an extraordinary second half of the season can motivate Vettel to re-evaluate his decision.
