‘Pink Mercedes’ Controversy Didn’t Influence Aston Martin F1 Decision: Sebastian Vettel

Only a week ago was it announced that Sebastian Vettel would be joining Aston Martin for the 2021 season. The move certainly seems to benefit both parties. But some wondered whether Vettel was perturbed by the fact that the team had effectively copied the Mercedes W10 in pursuit of quick success. The German thus made his opinion known.
He said, “Obviously there’s been a lot of talks in recent weeks about this topic. But this didn’t really play a big role for me because I’m more convinced of the strength of the team.
“Not having the money in recent years to perform on a similar level to the big team, they’ve done remarkably well. There’s definitely enough guts in that team to prove people wrong.”

At least for the next year, Vettel is safe in the knowledge that he will be driving a version of the RP20 itself. That should give him the confidence to fight at the front end of the grid for podiums.
However, a change in the rules with regards to copying could throw a spanner in the works for both the team and driver.
Nevertheless, Vettel remains confident in the team’s abilities to provide him with a good car. He said, “I don’t think they will change things much. There’s huge potential for growth. I’m looking forward to joining the team and trying to help them with everything that I know.”

“Time will tell, but I have a good feeling. I’ve known people there for a very long time and where the team is going is a very positive trend.”
However, before Vettel’s adventure with Aston Martin begins, his chapter with Ferrari must close. Heading into the second half of the 2020 season with the race in Sochi (27th of September), Vettel will want to make sure he leaves the Scuderia with a lot more than just 17 points.
