FIA Formula 2 driver Sergio Sette Camara has officially returned to the Red Bull family. After leaving the McLaren reserve driver role, the Austrian team recalled him to become the test & reserve driver for the 2020 season.

However, the young Brazilian will be sharing his duties with regular reserve driver, Sebastien Buemi. In fact, both drivers will be required to drive for sister teams Scuderia AlphaTauri and Aston Martin Red Bull Racing.

Obviously, Sergio Sette Camara will have to travel with both teams to some of the races throughout the 2020 F1 season. In addition to that, his duties will include assisting Red Bull’s existing Test & Reserve Driver, Sebastien Buemi, with simulator work.

Furthermore, the 21-year old will be on standby to support the Running Show Car programme throughout the season. This was only possible once Sette Camara scored the necessary points to obtain an F1 super license. He managed to finish fourth during last year’s FIA Formula 2 Championship.

When he spoke about rejoining the Red Bull family, he said, “I am extremely happy to join for the 2020 season. I’ve been watching F1 since I was five years old and I’m humbled to have been given this opportunity to work with Scuderia AlphaTauri and Red Bull.”

In addition to his F1 duties, he is also the reserve driver for the GEOX Dragon Formula E team. Further backing up his talent, is the fact that he set the second fastest lap time during the Marrakesh ePrix test.

While he is not racing much, he has tested for various fields in motorsport. This includes a test with Carlin for their IndyCar programme, alongside compatriot and former F1 driver, Felipe Nasr.

Last year, Camara finished the F2 season in 4th. He was behind champion Nyck de Vries, F1 graduate Nicholas Latifi, and Italian driver Luca Ghiotto. The Brazilian youngster took two wins in Austria and in Abu Dhabi. In addition to that, he amassed six podiums and took pole position on two occasions.

Hopefully for his sake, he eventually makes it up to the big leagues in Formula One. For that, Red Bull and AlphaTauri need to give him a chance.
